A Shetland Sheepdog is intensely loyal, affectionate and responsive to their owner. They may be reserved toward strangers. They are alert, agile and sturdy. Their ability to run swiftly and gracefully, and jump with agility over obstacles, makes them a delight in fields and woods as in farm work. But what most endear them to every body are their devoted, docile natures and their keen and all but human intelligence and understanding. A Shetland Sheepdog is 13 to 16 inches tall at their shoulders and their weight will vary. Shetland Sheepdogs have a double coat. The outer coat consists of long, straight, harsh hair and the undercoat is short, furry and dense. The hair on face, tips of ears and feet should be smooth. The mane and frill hair should be abundant and particularly impressive in males. The Shetland Sheepdog's coat needs brushed regularly to prevent matting and tangles. The Shetland Sheepdog originated on the Shetland Islands and came from the Collie. Many people have used them for herding sheep. They have always been associated with the Collie and people, even today, will refer to them as a "miniature Collie".
