The Shih-tzu is a sturdy, lively, alert toy dog
with a long flowing coat. The Shih-tzu's
temperment makes him the perfect "lap
dog". The Shih-tzu has a distinctive and
arrogant carriage with head held up high
and tail curved over the back. They are small,
intelligent and extremely docile. They are
wide-eyed, friendly and trusting. Retaining
a "regal" air, the Shih-tzu remains distinct
from other small breeds.
They are alert, friendly and people oriented.
They do not need long daily walks but they
do like to be a part of family events. The
Shih-tzu is an adoring clown who will serve
his owner as confidante, entertainer, best
friend and hand or foot warmer. They love
to be where their owner is and will almost
always follow if allowed to do so.
A Shih-tzu will weigh from 9 to 16 pounds and
8 to 10 inches in height. There are also smaller,
toy sized versions available.
The fur of the Shih-tzu is very much like human
hair and requires the same amount of attention.
Despite all of the work required, there are some
benefits because this long haired house pet does
not shed as other breeds do.
If you want your Shih-tzu to maintain the coat
for which the breed is famous, daily intervention
is required. There are also several cuts that make
the Shih-tzu coat more manangeable. Even then,
brushing must be done several days a week to
control matting. Even with a short clip, trimming
is needed every four to six weeks.
It is believed that the Shih-tzu was established
in China during the Manchu dynasty. They were
palace dogs and only the royalty were allowed
to own them. They used them as foot warmers.
